exciting news

the latest in the series of exciting bombshells hit late last week.

the New York-based multimedia artist Seth Apter contacted me and invited me to be part of his next book! i still can't quite believe it and double checked my email before i could type that sentence but it's true :)

land(marks) earth pleiades

this is my piece for the latest International Art Quilt Challenge:  it was my turn to choose the theme - land(marks).

this reflects two recurring themes in my work:  the landscape of Central Australia with its red dirt and dry riverbeds and the Pleiades, or Seven Sisters constellation.
i needlefelted alpaca fleece from local breeders, Melrose Alpacas (thanks Fiona!) onto silk chiffon and then machine stitched with silk thread. It was eucalypt dyed and handstitched onto the black linen background with silk, perle 8 and stranded cotton.

it's 41x33cm

and now for the news....

this was a big news week - first getting the wall space in in.cube8r gallery and all the excitement of getting pieces finished, frames painted, labels, cards and pricing done: not to mention the added excitement of unravelling the mystery of QR codes, which now appear on all my labels and business cards (VERY honourable mention to Kind Dog who sorted this out for me)

Kind Dog is also the creator of the second piece of news: my website!

it is up and running and can be found here - www.felicitygriffinclark.com

having a proper website has been on my 'to do' list for at least 3 years but i've never had the technical competence or confidence to do it - enter Kind Dog, stage left who has been working on computers since forever.
there are some more tweakings to do and we will be adding paypal gadgets but please do go and have a look and let me know what you think.

in less textile related news i got my formal acceptance form Melbourne University saying they will let me do my MA in Renaissance History - Thursday was a very running around with knickers on head day :)

ch-ch-ch-changes

you may have noticed that the blog looks a bit different - after 6 and half years i thought a renovation was in order....

back later with news

textile resurrection

so dear readers, when we last heard from the studio there had been some less than happy results. the silk paper that looked like porridge skin, the thread breaking, the chewing up of embroidery by the usually reliable janome...

luckily these have all phoenixed. first the unpromising porridge skin has been transformed with paint into something much more interesting

the sea star dried satisfactorily into something that looks very like the real thing - with the addition of some fabric paint and iridescent ink.
this was worth all the thread breaking and swearing
although i would like that issue to be fixed before i make any similar sort of creature

the muslin/silk organza is being improved with some hand stitching

and here is the latest item for the incube8r restocking (available from 13 july in the fitzroy store)
solomon's gate 11 inches or 28 cms square
