here is my interpretation of the "through the window" challenge for the international quilt challenge group - i tried a number of other ideas that just didn't work and ended up going with some small pieces i was puddling around with and it became something bigger.
each panel is a piece of linen sprayed with diluted black ink and stitched with silk thread. the moon centre was made by putting a round sponge in the middle of the fabric and spraying the ink around it.
the bottom layer is canvas painted with black gesso and a piece of silk chiffon painted onto the canvas with more diluted black gesso. each panel is stitched on the foundation canvas/silk layer.
the 'sticks' are pieces of cotton mariner's string soaked in a mixture of paverpol, fibre paste, black pigment powder and fabric paint.

Oh my such an array of products used to produce such an incrediable piece of beauty! I'd never figure it out...the outcome amazing!
The intensity of light coming from the moon is haunting.
Love the subtlety and luminosity of this work - especially the coloured hand stitching on grey.
this is brilliant.... i absolutely love it. And thank you for sharing your how to's. First time here, so am going to read backwards....
It's such a thoughtful interpretation of the theme. At first glance it looks like three windows of a room, looking out at the pale moon in mist. Closer, though, and the background streaks become faint illumination in high translucent clouds; closer still, and the twig forms are slender trees silvered by moonlight. Are we in a room, or outside looking at the sky, or following a path in a midnight forest? The moon reflects sunlight - taking out all the colour, save a pearly grey - which reflects in turn from the clouds, from the trees, perhaps from the windows around us. Just cloth, and stitches, and monochrome ink, but it's filled with light and depth and mysterious places.
beautiful haunting work
