‘Making art' has become an increasing important part of my life and identity – I want to keep pushing and blurring the boundaries between textiles, stitching and painting. Putting my textile art in the public space (physically, as well as in cyberspace) is an important part of that process - to keep evolving and trying new ways of expressing myself. I like using simple techniques to create texture and colour and to manipulate fabric in different ways. I love using recycled clothes and bits of 'stuff' such as copper wire, feathers and other pavement finds. At the moment I am playing with combining stitch and painting - canvas and silk, paint and thread to see what happens. I make imperfect art textiles, particularly burnt "quilts" - synthetics and other bits and pieces, layered over a wool base, covered in tulle or organza, free motion stitched then burnt back with a heat gun. My influences are Judy Watson, Andy Goldsworthy and Mark Rothko. |
